Pursuing Private Adoption

Overview

Over 350 Manitoban couples and individuals have trusted Adoption Options to help them build their "forever families" through private adoption.

Adoption Options will provide you with support and services in such areas as:

Education

Adoption Options provides a mandatory three-day education seminar for prospective adoptive parents that will walk you through the adoption process so you can decide if adoption is right for you.  Throughout the process, we will educate you about such important topics as adoption law and procedures, how open adoption works, and the ethical and moral issues you will encounter as an adoptive parent.

Homestudy

Manitoba law requires all prospective adoptive parents undergo a homestudy to determine your suitability, capability and willingness to parent a child. One of our adoption counsellors will conduct a series of personal interviews and complete this portion of your application. There are several requirements for the homestudy including criminal record checks, child abuse regisrty checks, medicals and references prior to being approved.

Matching

Adoption Options uses a tried-and-true system for matching birthmothers and prospective parents based on criteria submitted by both parties. This double match system allows birthmothers to view letters and photographs from approved families.  Generally birthmothers view between three and fifteen families, narrowing it down to two and then read further information before they choose a family.  Adoption Options facilitates an introductory meeting between the birthmother and prospective adoptive parent(s).

Placement

Once your family is chosen by a birthmother, Adoption Options will work with both the birthmother and yourselves through the placement process from start to finish to help ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved. This includes helping you prepare basic supplies for your new arrival, helping you navigate the legal process, and facilitating the child’s transfer of care into your home.

Counselling

Our compassionate team is committed to providing ongoing support and counselling before, during and after placement for both you and your birthfamily.
